To our Customers, Partners, Community Leaders,
The Advisory Council on Aging is a volunteer leadership body mandated under both the Older Americans Act and Older Californians Act. Members are appointed to serve in an advisory capacity to the Office on Aging and the Board of Supervisors.
The Council is comprised of seventeen volunteer leaders from throughout the County. Five are appointed by the Board of Supervisors and the remaining twelve are recruited and selected by the Council and approved by the Board of Supervisors.
How we help seniors and adults with disabilities.
The Advisory Council considers population trends, unmet needs, and emerging issues affecting seniors and adults with disabilities. They participate in developing the four year strategic plan on aging for approval by the Board of Supervisors and the California Department on Aging.
As advocates for seniors and adults with disabilities, they identify priority legislative and regulatory issues and recommend policy strategies for the future. Advisory Council leaders have the responsibility to raise issues, recommend changes and advocate for those changes. Without Council leadership, opportunities to improve services in aging would be fewer and negative attitudes of ageism would be stronger. Effective volunteer leaders in partnership with community liaisons will continue to make a difference for seniors and adults with disabilities in Riverside County.
Committees and subcommittees
The Advisory Council has developed committees and subcommittees organized to address the objectives in the 2005-2009 Office on Aging Strategic Plan on Aging-”Strength in Aging”. The objectives in this plan address housing, transportation, technology, intergenerational, health and wellness, family caregiving, community outreach and education. Ad Hoc committees are developed when an immediate response is needed for short term or timely issues that may not have been identified in the strategic plan.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend Advisory Council meetings. The Council meets the third Wednesday of each month, September through June beginning at 9 am. For more information on Council meetings and to RSVP, please contact Lynette Worrell at (951) 867-3800 or (800) 510-2020 or TTL: (951) 697-4699.
