I was born in Los Angeles, CA and raised in Southern California. Through the years, I have taught Insurance Law classes and have worked in the Life & Health and Property & Casualty Insurance industry since 1982.

The last 6 years I have worked for SCAN Health Plan working with Medicare recipients as well as dual eligible Medicare and Medi-Cal recipients. I joined the Riverside County Office on Aging Advisory Council on Aging in 2011.

Growing up, I always gravitated to and have been an advocate for seniors for over 40 years. When I am not working, I enjoy giving back to my community and donate over 1,600 hours a year through the Office on Aging and The Harvesters Group helping seniors in Riverside County.

Helping others has always been a passion of mine. I enjoy working closely with a variety of health professionals in putting together health screenings and senior information fairs. It would not be the holidays, without organizing food drives; and delivering boxes of food at Thanksgiving and Christmas to seniors in need.

Through the last several years, I have been honored to receive several awards and certificates of recognition and appreciation:
• 2012 and 2011 from SCAN Health Plan: The Spirit of Service - Community Volunteer Award;
• 2011 from City of Perris Senior Center: Outstanding Service Award;
• 2011 from Senator Joel Anderson: State of CA Senate - Certificate of Recognition;
• 2010 from City of Temecula Community Service Commission and Community Service Department: In appreciation of support of Senior Services and Programs;
• 2009 from Angel Food at Grace: The Angel Award for Outstanding Community Service.

I also received Certificates of Appreciation in 2010 and 2009 from both:
• Perris Senior Center; and
• Nattie Mae Julian Women Missionary Society.

Born in 1940 in the Midwest, I grew up and went to college in the East and have now lived in California for almost 50 years. Originally a "stay-at-home" Mom, I started volunteering when I came to Riverside in 1973.

But in 1977, after volunteering for several years, I was hired by the San Andreas Council as the Camp Fire Riverside Area Coordinator. In 1983 I became the Volunteer Coordinator for the Volunteer Center. Very soon the Executive Director asked me to help set up and organize the LTC Ombudsman Program at the agency. I was named the Ombudsman Program Manager soon after - in 1984. In 1992 I was hired as the Program Director of the HICAP in both Riverside and San Bernardino Counties under Inland Agency.

I retired in 2010 and almost immediately was named to be on the California Senior Legislature. In 2011 I was accepted by Riverside County as a member of the Riverside County Advisory Council on Aging.

I was a founding member of the Inland Empire Disability Collaborative in about 2008, and have been on the boards of Jefferson House, the YWCA, LWV and AAUW in Riverside, as well as the Senior and Disabled Fund of San Bernardino County. I am also a member of the Uptown Kiwanis Club of Riverside.

The Advisory Council on Aging was created in 1974 and is a seventeen member volunteer leadership body mandated under both the Older Americans Act and the Older Californians Act.

As Advocates for seniors and adults with disability, the Council identifies priority legislative and regulatory issues and recommends strategies for the future. The Council also considers population trends, unmet needs, and emerging issues affecting seniors and adults with disabilities to use in the development of the Strategic Plan on Aging. The Council focuses on outcomes for individuals and communities, and on performance measures for programs and services to gain a clearer understanding of how aging services and funds are affecting the lives of people and communities.

Council Members hold an important role as the eyes, ears, and voice for seniors and adults with disability in their communities. With this voice they have the responsibility to raise issues, recommend changes and advocate for those changes. Without Council leadership, opportunities to improve services would be fewer and negative attitudes of ageism would be stronger. Effective volunteer leaders in partnership with community liaisons will continue to make a difference for seniors and adults with disabilities in Riverside County.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend Advisory Council meetings which are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month, September through June beginning at 10 a.m.. ADVISORY COUNCIL AGENDA

ADVOCACY
The Older Americans Act of 1965 provides the framework for the aging network. A broad based system of community based services and support for elders. State Units on Aging and over six hundred local Area Agencies on Aging, including the Office on Aging together with the Administration on Aging make up the Aging Network. Found throughout the Older Americans Act is the mandate for the entire Aging Network to take up the charge of Advocating for Elders and although the Act has been revisited, revised and renewed over the years, that core mandate remains as a central focal point of the mission of the Aging Network and each Area Agency on Aging in particular. The Office on Aging and Advisory Council on Aging takes this responsibility seriously and since its inception, the Office on Aging and Advisory Council on Aging has recognized Advocacy as one of its core functions. The Office on Aging and Advisory Council on Aging works with its key advocacy partners, the California Association of Area Agencies on Aging (C4A) and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (N4A) in advocating for the development of policies, programs and services that promote and protect the dignity and independence of older adults. The focus of federal advocacy efforts remains continued reauthorization and funding of the Older Americans Act that serves to provide for a network of services and supports targeted to older adults and it enables the Office on Aging to provide essential services, supports and advocacy for the elders of the County of Riverside. Through the establishment of the Aging and Disability Resource Connection (ADRC) of Riverside County, the Office on Aging along with the Advisory Council on Aging has developed a network of partner agencies that is dedicated to collaborative advocacy on behalf of the elders of Riverside County. Finally, the root and goal of our extensive advocacy efforts speaks to the core value of the Office on Aging… “The Right to Age With Dignity.”
